California Central Coast AVA<
Central coast AVA

The Central Coast AVA is a large coastal appellation in California that spans from San Francisco to Santa Barbara and encompasses many smaller AVAs. The appellation is strongly influenced by the Pacific Ocean’s cooling influence. High winds, dry days and ocean fogs create a one of the longest growing seasons in the world. Once known for white varietals, the region is gaining popularity for red varietals as well.

Ranging from the San Francisco Bay Area to Santa Cruz, the Northern Central Coast is home to many red varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The cooling influence of both the San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean provides classic grape growing conditions, while well-drained gravel soils increases flavor concentration.

Encompassing Monterey and San Benito counties, Mid Central Coast is heavily influenced by its proximity Monterey Bay and lack of rainfall. Warm days and cool nights allow for slow fruit maturation on the vine, leading to concentrated flavors.

San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties make up the Southern Central Coast, where Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are popular. The region’s warm days give way to cool nights, often with 40 degree temperature drops. The varying terrain and climates create unique microclimates, excellent conditions of both cool and warm climate varietals.
